Welcome to the Bodaboda Safety Association of Uganda, where we advocate for safe and dependable bodaboda transportation. Bodabodas, or motorcycle taxis, are integral to Uganda’s transport network, employing over 1.2 million youths and enhancing accessibility, economic growth, and quality of life.

By navigating rugged terrain and bypassing congested roads, bodabodas ensure no community is left behind, fostering inclusivity and development. They stimulate local economies through increased consumer spending and contribute to Uganda’s economic prosperity. Moreover, bodaboda operations enable riders to improve their living standards, providing for their families and accessing essential services like education and healthcare.

Our association prioritizes safety through comprehensive training and advocacy for road safety measures. Join us in promoting responsible bodaboda practices and building a safer, more prosperous future for Uganda.

The Bodaboda Safety Association of Uganda (BAU) is the vision of Mr. Robert Matsiko Tumwebaze, who has been in the bodaboda industry for over ten years across different parts of Uganda. After witnessing the rising number of road accidents and the widespread lack of awareness about road safety, he felt the need to take action. His goal was to combat road safety ignorance and abuses while promoting training, economic empowerment, and a culture of saving among bodaboda riders across the country.

Leadership Structure

BAU operates under a structured leadership system that ensures effective coordination and representation at all levels:

  • National level

  • Regional level (Central, Eastern, Northern, and Western Uganda)

  • District level, in accordance with government protocol

Purpose and Partnerships

BAU aims to recruit self-driven and responsible members to eliminate bad elements and criminal activities within the bodaboda sector. Through the Bodaboda Information Management System (BIMS), the association works hand in hand with NGOs and government agencies to train and support riders.

Mr. Robert Matsiko Tumwebaze is also privileged to partner with Mr. Kevin Bwire Mubadi, the National Chairman of the Bodaboda Safety Association of Kenya (BAK), for knowledge exchange and better referencing.

Our Mandate

The Bodaboda Safety Association of Uganda is committed to:

  • Acting as a bridge between the government and bodaboda riders.

  • Providing training to reduce road accidents, drug and alcohol abuse, and other causes of unsafe riding.

  • Organising members into groups such as SACCOs to encourage saving and investment for a better future.

  • Mobilising donor support to establish parking shelters for riders across the country, protecting them from harsh weather and motivating them in their work.

  • Sponsoring road safety tools and resources such as helmets, reflectors, jackets, riding boots, motorbikes, insurance covers, saving schemes, and bodaboda loan services.

Course of Action

BAU’s work is deeply rooted in youth empowerment, focusing on economic, social, health, and road safety initiatives. Since the majority of bodaboda riders are young people earning a living through the public transport sector, supporting this cause directly contributes to saving lives, empowering youth, and ensuring safer roads for everyone in Uganda.

Collaboration with Government and Agencies

BAU works closely with key government bodies and agencies to achieve its goals, including:

  • Ministry of Works and Transport / UNRA

  • Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development

  • Ministry of Internal Affairs

  • Uganda Police

  • Uganda Revenue Authority (URA)

  • Local government authorities

Together, these partnerships strengthen BAU’s mission to build a safer, more organised, and economically empowered bodaboda community across Uganda.
